We are an artistic cooperative. We come from all walks of life and have different insights, interests and careers. What we have in common is an interest in developing and practising the ancient art form of mosaic.

Mosaic pieces are worked on individually and collectively and include a variety of materials. Our styles of mosaics reflects the diversity within the group. We range from beginners to those with considerable experience.

We all contribute to the on-going viability of the cooperative and ensure a safe working environment by sharing the tasks necessary for upkeep and support of the studio space.

WORKING WITH THE COMMUNITY

As a collective, we host exhibitions and have also participated in wider community projects.

A BRIEF HISTORY

September 2010 Mosaics @ the Cowshed formally opened its doors in the Old Dairy adjacent to Hazel McDougall House in Como as a cooperative of mosaic artists. The Old Dairy is easily accessible and situated in the inspiring location beside Neil McDougall Park and lake.

SOUTH PERTH ARTS & CRAFTS SOCIETY (SPARCS)

Hazel McDougall House and the Old Dairy are owned by the City of South Perth and administered by SPARCS. Each Mosaic @ the Cowshed member is affiliated with SPARCS through a nominal fee included in our yearly subscription.

HAZEL MCDOUGALL HOUSE

Neil and Hazel McDougall bought the land, now known as McDougall Park, in 1914.  They raised a small dairy herd and developed their own dairy to support local residents. Having no children, the couple sold off part of the land to the City of South Perth in 1951 so that the community could enjoy the open space. Following this, Hazel McDougall House was built. In the mid to late sixties, whilst Hazel was alive, the land was redeveloped by the South Perth City Council, turning the original swamp into the lake and planting new trees on the original grazing pasture.

Today there are barbecue and picnic facilities, an amphitheatre and very popular children’s playground. The Old Dairy, the stables, the outbuildings and some of the wooden fences are heritage listed. Many of the original features of the buildings have been left unchanged. All buildings are maintained by the City of South Perth.
