What does that mean? For nine intense and busy days in September, Mosaics @ The Cowshed hosted Solange and Alexandre Piffer, all the way from Brazil with their two children, to facilitate two workshops covering the mosaic art of picassiette (a style of mosaic that incorporates pieces of broken ceramics - plates, dishes, cups, tiles and other found objects into a design).
The first three days, nine participants, spent the time making flowers – pansies, gerberas, tulips, roses, hydrangeas, daisies, fuchsias and poppies. Each flower was painstakingly cut, ground and glued to create exquisite bouquets in individual vases; also cut and glued into place.
The second six days, twelve participants interpreted photographic designs of cats, cows, roosters, dogs, an emu and an alpaca; then cutting, grinding and gluing to create our wonderful master pieces.
We discovered a different way to look at our images and explored techniques we had never tried before. It was a wonderful experience.
Our fellow class mates; members of Mosaics @ The Cowshed along with other mosaic artists from as far as Geraldton, Busselton, Pinjarra and Perth all enjoyed each other’s company along with the wonderful assistance provided by other members of the Cowshed to help to set up, clean away and provide healthy delicious lunches and snacks. Pam and Penny, two of our members also put a lot of work into the behind the scenes organisation and hosting the Piffer family with their Perth stay.
Overall they were two successful workshops and everybody came away with new skills and an interest to have another go at this delightful form of mosaics.
